CJ Meehan

CJ Meehan works in one of two Preschool classrooms at the Henry Barnard Laboratory School at Rhode Island College. CJ has an undergraduate degree in Psychology and Child Development, a Master's in the Art of Teaching - Elementary Education, and will complete here second master’s, in Early Childhood Education, in the Spring of 2020. CJ began her training in Mindfulness in 2010, and has completed over 150 hours of training through Mindful Schools and other Mindfulness education programs. Over the last 8 years, CJ has worked to cultivate a curriculum in Mindfulness that is appropriate for use in educational settings. She implements her program, "Mindful Moments" in both the Preschool classroom that she shares with Mrs. Cheryl Paul and as an after-school program for other HBS learners. CJ presented this pilot program at Teacher Fest 2017 and is excited to share an updated version at Teacher Fest 2019. CJ is committed to creating a welcoming classroom environment for all her students and their families. The issues facing LGTBQ+ families and youth became of particular interest to her after reading about Jazz Jennings, a trans female teenager, in 2014. Since then, CJ has done countless hours of research which she has turned into advocacy within the Henry Barnard Laboratory School and Rhode Island College campus. Her presentation, "Mirrors & Windows: Students' Rights, Teachers' Responsibilities" was presented at RIC during Diversity Week 2017 and she is excited to share an updated version at Teacher Fest 2019.
